What does a business coach actually do?
A good coach helps you work on the business, not just in it. That means getting clear on your numbers, your pricing, your systems and your team, then holding you to the plan. You still make the calls. The coach brings an outside view, practical tools and the accountability that keeps things moving.
Is coaching really worth it for a small trade business?
For a lot of owners it is the difference between a stressful job they own and a business that pays them well. Small changes to pricing, quoting and systems add up fast. If you are flat out but the profit is thin, that gap is usual where coaching pays for itself several times over.
How is a coach different from my accountant?
Your accountant tells you what already happened and keeps you compliant, which matters. A coach works on what happens next: winning better clients, lifting margins, and building systems so the work does not all rest on you. The two roles sit alongside each other rather than replace one another.
How long before I see results?
Most owners feel the difference in the first few weeks, usually through clearer pricing and better quoting. Bigger shifts in profit and time off tend to land over three to six months as the systems bed in. It is steady progress, not an overnight fix, and the changes are built to last.
Do I need to be good with numbers?
No. Plenty of sharp tradespeople never loved the paperwork side, and that is fine. A coach walks you through the figures that matter in plain language so you can make confident decisions. You end up understanding your business far better without needing to become an accountant.
What happens in a typical coaching session?
You look at where the business is right now, pick the few things that will make the biggest difference, and agree clear actions before the next session. Sessions are practical and honest, with real problems on the table. Between them you put the plan into action and report back on how it went.
Will coaching work if I am already flat out?
That is exactly when it helps most. Being flat out is usually a sign the business is running you rather than the other way around. Coaching starts by taking things off your plate through better systems and delegation, so you get time back rather than adding another job to the pile.
What is a game plan or strategy session?
It is a first proper conversation about where you are, what is holding you back, and whether coaching is the right move for you. There is no hard sell. You leave with a clearer picture of your options and a sense of the difference a plan could make, whether or not you decide to go further.
